The crane flew from the edge
of the pond, the fish rose from
the deeps, grateful of the peace
granted by its predatory absence.

A breeze shakes the hedgerow
freeing the winter rose from the
snow’s captivity, allowing its lovely
white scented petals to see the sun.

Like the rose, I crane my neck to accept
the diffuse light, the star’s pinpoint focus
smeared by clouds and early mist,
yet it is far from darkness.

Hope is a crane which hoists my spirits,
the tiny blessings of this morning, safety,
beauty, and light, are counterweights
to the night’s despondence.
