what we’re reading – january 20, 2020

this new volume of poetry is a gut punch, a call to action and awareness. it will send you to your history books searching for more answers. in “mowing leaves of grass” by matt sedillo, he holds back no punches.

when i first read about the forthcoming release of this book from FlowerSong Books, i was curious about the title. not after i read the opening poem, “Pilgrim.” it mows down outdated standards and decolonizes the written word.

in the title poem sedillo speaks from the outside, words he may well have heard: “This is economic/Objective/The law of self interest/If we let you in/What will become/Of the cannon/The classics.” Sedillo demands to be let in, deserves to be let in. hell, let him take over. this book needs to be on your bookshelf, in your purse, on your side table: within reach.
