i wander into the darkness
groping my way through the shadows.
the lights went out in my neighbour’s house
and mine, connected to theirs, went too.
do we know where we are going?
will we take others with us,
or will we force some to leave
even when we need them,
need their numbers,
their guiding hands,
their eyes accustomed to the dark?
i fear for us.
i fear for the world.
seek shelter and hold your breath.

Benediction for Ice Cream by Ana Marie Boyd
I can still hear the slow jam jingle of the ice cream truck gliding along past our yellow house like it was riding on rails
