| words that get in your teeth

Bruising like stonefruit by Joanne Macias

Your gaze becomes a stare,
forcing your views without saying a word.
Your eyes tell me a story.
One where I fall to the wayside.

You think I am soft,
that if you say the wrong words
that I will easily bruise.
That this is my only value.

I can see deep within your soul,
it’s where you tell me my value,
or at least lack thereof.
You, however, do not see past my exterior.

Yes, I am sweet this is true.
I do not wish to hide this fact,
yet only those who truly know me –
Know about my strong core.

It was not always this way.
I did not always need to protect my heart.
It was only when you kept trying to attack,
did I feel that I needed to build my shield.

I am not as vulnerable as you think,
yet you refuse to know me below the surface.
If you did, then you would know
that I am not as soft as you once thought.
